wipers don't do their job

Hi,

My wipers not wiping water off properly, I replaced them with a new pair of blades only to discover that the new ones didn't work any better. It looks like the wiper arms do not apply enough pressure on the blades.

Is there a way to tighten the arms, maybe be shortening the springs, so that the blades wipe the windscreen better?

You can prove wether increasing the spring pressure will improve your wipers by merely bending the thin part of the arms so that the pressure on the glass is increased, if it improves matter then,yes, more spring pressure will help. The problem with bending the arms is that they may then foul the edge of the bonnet when you raise it.

I spent quite a while trying to increase the spring pressure on my old wiper arms with very little success. I eventually gave up and bought a pair of new Tex arms from ESM and they work much better.

Hi, I had the same problem too. I also bought a pair of TEX wiper arms direct from TEX. They are much better and the arm can pivot towards the window more compared to the other new arms you can get. Also they seem better made and there is a screw on the base so you can tighten the arm to the spline. I'm very happy with them, please buy a pair if you are in the same situation.

Mine are terrible but not the most important thing to be looking at, rely on rainex after 25mph.
Incidentally its always worth using rainex just in case you get a wiper failure on a long rainy journey. Doubly useful here on all the windows (house included) for stopping them getting salt residue after a bit of a squall.
The internal anti fog one they do does just that 7 great for stopping dog slobber sticking to the insides too

Aye - ^^^^^ - it does look v strange. Just out of interest - can you now 'edit' that post simmitc??
Back to the wipers - the 'chrome' blades and arms are renouned for being useless - just in case that's what you have. So yes - as above - buy new reputable parts and your wiping will be back to normal. Of course - this only applies to the driver's side - no need to worry about the passenger. The less they can see - the better!

Didn't try to edit it, and contents now deleted so won't try. What I can recall posting in this thread, but now can't see, was that Morris Minor Centre Birmingham sell heavy duty arms and blades. I fitted these and they are far far superior to the batch of cheap arms avilable. Other suppliers also sell two grades. It's what we keep saying that one gets what one pays for.

It was a post of mine from about November last year, and in another thread. No idea how ie got there, and under your name. Net gremlins, I'm guessing.
