Handbrake adjustment

Post by jojax64 »

I've had the brakes adjusted. The handbrake was overlooked, though it does seem to work well. There is however quite a lot of travel before it's fully engaged and I suppose I have to tighten the nuts either side of the lever. When I do this, is there a "set amount" of tightening I should do? What I mean is...if I overtighten the nuts does it actually cause the rear wheel cylindars to engage the brake shoes...ie cause them to stick on?
Cheers
Joe.

ideally you want it so that when the handbrake is in the off position the cables are not in tension. if they are too tight then yes the rear brakes will be on all the time! tighten the nuts (can usually be done with your fingers) until there is only a small amount of slack in the cables.

But make sure the adjustments in the cylinders are pulled up properly (ie double check this) before you tighten the cables.

id tighten the cables to lock the rear wheels at the fourth click. make sure rear drums are adjusted before you start.

lock the rear brakes with the adjuster on the cylinder, then adjust hanbrake to 3 or 4 clicks , then release and then knock the cylinder adjuster back as normal to adjust the rear brakes
