Carb identification

Went along to an auction today, missed out on a 1098 engine that went for a tenner

. Anyway, I picked up an HS2 on its manifold and another SU carb as well, both for a quid, not bad me thought. But, can anyone identify what this carb is, and will it be any good as some kind of moggy mod? The dashpot is a LOT bigger than that of your normal moggy carb, and the butterfly has "22.5" stamped on it.

Hello YG,

it looks very much like an HS4, easily checked by measuring the bore.
S.U.'s are numbered by the bore or choke diameter, 1" + the number of 1\8"s, therefore a HS4 or a H4 is a 1" + 4 x 1\8" =11\2".

You will need a different manifold as the bolt configuration is different but it is OK for a 1098 especially if you find a better head.

Thanks alec, ill get my Verniers out tommorrow.

My engine is a 948, would the carb still be any good, or would i have to fit a different head?

probably not as useful unless you do a lot of work on it, I had assumed a 1098, sorry.

Oh the 948 will be fine with a bigger carb - but a bigger valve head will be even better! Thought you were fitting a 940 head ?

Yep, HS4, and should be OK for a 948 I'd have thought. The 998 Minis had HS2 carbs to start with but went to HS4 (around mid 73 IIRC) and never had a problem, can't see why that 50cc less should be hurt with 1/4" more carb

It will, as posted, need a different inlet to use it though.

It would also benefit from a solid butterfly instead of that nasty poppet vlaved one, but at least it's not a waxstat jet!

Although looking again, is it the rear carb off a Triumph install? I'm thinking teh float and linkages are the wrong way round for a single carb setup...

The air filter should help point towards what it came off.

I'm trying to work out if it's a normal single or the rear of twins, and can't quite get to the cupboard I can see the end of a twin inlet with carbs in to check!

Whereabout was this auction? Someone mentioned one on the Dorset/ Devon border the other week where there were bargains to be had, seems I only hear about them after the event!

The auction was in Holsworthy, North Devon.

Ill take a snap of the air filter, and the underside fo the carb.

Whatever carb it is - it will work ok on the Minor provided it fits the manifold.
