engine lifting

whats the best place to attach something to lift the engine out.

i have a hoist with a clip on the end of a chain

was thinking about getting a bracket thing next time i order something.
but haven't got one yet

You can just wrap stout ropes round it and clip to them - or use a lifting eye on a head stud after taking the head off. Engines used to come with two of them (there's faith for you - BMC were planning on the engine coming out when thye delivered the new car!) - but soon the economies set in and the eyes were eliminated. I just use a tow ropegoing down the rear trapped between the sump and the backplate and back through the exhaust manifold, over the lifting hook and back down between the front late and sump and back up again through the manifold so it can't slip and is in a figure of 8.

We used the grandson's skateboard under the back of the gearbox, and lifted the lot out the front. When we got to the point of balance, we moved the skateboard to the front, and slid the whole lot out. :roll:
