Half shaft oil seal

I've been told I've a leaky seal on the near side, not too bad but will require attention soon.
So, is the seal "behind" the bearing....what I'm asking is do I need to renew the wheel bearing when changing the seal?

Nope.

Luckily its just pressed into the back of the half shaft. You'll miss it if you dont look careful enough.
Its basically a rubber O ring thats sat in a corresponding groove on the shaft - or hub depending on what it sticks to when you pull the shaft out.

There's also a paper gasket between the half-shaft and hub. I'd advise replacing both this and the O ring, after cleaning off any remaining particles of old gasket. Is there any oil contamination on the outside of the brake backplate? (This can be seen without removing the drum.) If so, it probably means that the oil seal behind the bearing needs replacement also. (I renovated this very area only last week!) I decided to replace the bearing at the same time, seems sensible in case removing the bearing to get at that seal disturbs it and causes it to fail a few weeks down the road!

As Dominic says - you need to determine which 'seal' is leaking - and in fact probably best to order one of each and just change them all. Bearing change will depend if there is any undue wear or roughness. It's also likely the brake shoes will now be contaminated with oil - so new shoes 'in stock' will be handy - and if much oil has escaped - remember to check the diff oil level and make sure the breather is not blocked because this can be a cause of leaking seals - pressure in the diff pushing oil past the seals.

You can get a kit with the bearing, the two rubber seals and the gasket! from ESM, and probably from BM and the others too.

Replacing a rear bearing is easier than falling off a moving log.

There's only one and its about the size of a small planet and just as tough. Take you no time at all to beat the old one out and rake the seal out with a screwdriver.

As mentioned, the kit comes with all the bits you need, I didn't even know you could buy the bearings without the kit?

Got several nos rear hub bearings in the spares cabinet - collected over the years - never had to change one yet!

Yes, there is contamination on the back of the backplate.
No sign of leakage on the brake shoes, though.
Thanks for the advice, I'll nip over to ESM ASAP and order up the kit.
