Oil change - new engine

Post by Dominic »

Hi folks
Just wondered what the general consensus might be regarding an oil change on a newly fitted engine. It had it's first change at 500 miles, as per the book, and is now on 2,250 miles. The reason I ask is that I am taking it on holiday to Cornwall next weekend, and will have notched up another 12 - 1500 miles in all probability by the time I return. Would it be ok to leave the next oil change until I return, or would it be wise to change it early before leaving? Also, is it worth flushing the engine before refilling the oil? Any input greatfully received as usual.

I normally get the engine hot, drain the oil. Then I pour a bit of new oil into the engine and wait till that comes out the bottom.

If it was cheap oil - then change now. If expensive oil - it will be fine as is. No 'flushing' necessary!

Duckhams Q 20/50 so I guess it will do!
Now what do I do with half a gallon of flushing oil? ebay I guess... that great recycler!

Oil is cheaper than wrecking the engine, so change it before you go on Holiday. Won;t do any harm. I change the oil in my Traveller twice a year (about 2500 miles).
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

I see that its Duckams Q you have used, it will be fine for another few thousand miles. But I would do another oil change when you return from holiday.

I buy my Duckhams from MGM spares Bme - they charge £6.95 + vat, but the delivery I guess would push the price up. I get it when passing, buy 2 or 3 gallons at a time.
