rattling fan??
can someone help me please??
I'm getting a rattling sound from the fan (I think).
Things were fine until I took the old dynamo off. I cleaned it up and replaced it and the rattle started. I've subsequently replaced the dynamo (which now works well) but the rattle continues.
It sounds like it's coming from the fan and I don't think it's the bearings on the dynamo...the fan belt isn't too tight.
Has anyone got any bright ideas??

Have you tried pulling on the fan blades to see if anything is coming loose and checked the bolts also is there any play in the water pump as the bearings can make some odd noises.
Cheers

Silly question, but are the fan blades close to the radiator?
The fan is only sheet metal so can get bent if you're not careful. There should normally be a decent clearance between the fan and the rad.
Under braking the engine will move forward on it's rubber mounts making the fan more likely to catch. (there is a steady cable on the gearbox to prevent excessive forwards movement of the engine/gearbox, but these are sometimes damaged or missing)

Also, If one of the pump bolts has come loose or not been done up tight enough, It can rub on the inside of the fan's/pump's pully wheel rim causing a metal on metal rattly sound.

easy fix...
Just remove the fan. It makes a lot of noise and is ineffective over about 20mph. If the radiator is OK you won't overheat as the minor is over-cooled anyway. I run a tuned 1275 A+ with std 2nd hand rad and no fan and it only overheats if you are idling in traffic for more than 30mins. You can always turn the heater on and open the windows anyway...
