Clutch alignment

Post by Peetee »

Can anyone tell me the two diameters needed for the fittings on a clutch alignment tool. I know someone who can adapt an existing part with the right measurements.
Ta. :D

At the weekend I simply used the valve grinding tool with black tape wrapped round. The wood shaft fitted the bush and the tape was wound on just enough to fit inside the splined centre of the plate. It worked perfectly! No need for anything fancy.

Just pop it out and wedge it into the flywheel, then batter the plate down onto it so it stays there while you fit the basket...

I lost my valve grinding stick, so I have been using a wooden spoon with tape wrapped round it instead.
All that clutch alignment does is to allow you to assemble onto the gearbox - therefore it can be done by eye if you're very careful (but use a decent tool if you don't want the hassle). As soon as you press the clutch pedal the clutch finds its own centre.

Will the MK1 do? I'm still on my first set, and as far as I'm aware there wasn't a previous 'me'.

Little finger through the clutch plate into the flywheel spigot - works at treat!! Checked with the MkII eyeball, just to make sure.

Bingo! you were right!
However, what you did forget to mention was to attach a bit of string to the finger so you could retrieve it after the clutch is tightened. :D

Or get a clutch alignment tool from halfords, use it and return it claiming it didn't fit the clutch plate. Worked for me 2 months after I bought it.

What's more amazing is you went into a Halfords store, asked for a clutch alignment tool and actually got one.
In my local branch that's a sure fire way to get a blank look and a dumb question like "What colour car is that for sir?"
What would Macgyver do..?
