Head off... but why the deposits

Does anyone know what caused the deposits in the cylinder head? Theres also some powder on top the pistons in cyls 1+4...

to me no.4 (white) suggests running extremely weak. Are you sure that two and three weren't connected by a blown head gasket.

Just fairly natural deposits of an engine that hasn't been de-coked for a while. #4 looks as if it might have been a bit oily - and 2 and 3 I guess have been stopped with valves open letting in moist air. Clean it up best you can - without scoring the head face. Wire brush in leccy drill should be good. and the flat end of a 12" steel rule (poundland) is handy too - as are a set of the little paint scrapers (also poundland) - use then for this and then throw away.

Just an idea but would it be worth using a brass brush in a drill... instead of normal wire.
No chance of scratching anything then.

If you can find one! Steel wire struggles to move it sometimes. The brush should be kept inside the chambers - and not used on the flat surfaces.

Is it definitely seized? Is there oil in the sump? What condition are the bores in? No. 1 looks a bit scored but that might be a trick of the light.

Seems to be a lot of oil gunk between the two center cyclinders.

Is the head gasket dead?

If its seized have you tried 'rocking' it to free it up?

I still don't like the look between two and three,perhaps it was water getting in there. Was there an oily film in the radiator water or is there evidence of water in the sump? Have you checked which, if any, of the pistons can be moved from side to side in their present state.

Barry - pull that starter motor off - I thought you had it off ages ago - I still have a suspicion this whole problem may be caused by the starter !!

i have had a "seized engine" before that turned out to be jammed starter... easy to fix!
