I bought a complete A-Series from a guy in Stockport for £60 .... no he doesnt have any more where that came from ... but there are some great deals out there!
A new-to-you engine is highly likely to be cheaper than a regrind, although beware of engines which are too cheap (eg £20), as they might well have all the same problems as your current lump.
If you don't mind scrapping a car, then there are some very cheap (badly rotted) cars around that drive well
Thi is sometimes the cheapest way to get hold of a good engine (and gearbox). Be a bit carefull with that as if you can't road test it for a good 10 miles, then it's hard to tell if the engine is really sweet.
