Just joined! Welding required... lol

Post by Starchild »

Hello! Just joined, was an MMOC member years ago - glad to see it go digital!

My 1962 Morris 1000 failed its MOT  - garage said she needs specialist welding that they were not prepared to do... (too big a job for them)

On the offchance, can anyone recommend a garage prepared to do this (told it would be about/over 100 pounds) - that is in West Yorkshire??

Ta muchly,

£100 for welding it doesn't sound too much for that price.

i'm sure someone on here who lives near you will be able to do it for you or recomend someone nearby.

why not buyt a mig and learn to weld yourself get some old metal and practise, practise, practise until u get a good weld then give it a go.

welcome back by the way

From what ive seen, there is little "specialist" welding on a moggy. Where abouts on the car did it fail?

Chassis areas are just boxed sections. Should be cheap enough and easy enough to find someone who can weld em up with some thick plate.

Know anyone/anywhere that does a lot of work on Landrovers?

If the rots in the sill area thats pretty specialist as most welders wont know how the various boxing plates and whatnot are supposed to fit together.
What would Macgyver do..?

I agree there, i helped a friend replace such areas on his mog and it was a right jigsaw puzzle!

Agh, thats what I'm about to start welding up on mine - the inner sill on both sides for most of the length of the front doors.

ok - so it looks like my question has gone from "Can you recommend a garage for welding" to "Do you have a Landrover friend in Yorkshire with a MIG welder" lol....

Just concerned about being ripped off by unscrupulous peeps out there, having relocated from Devon and my trusted garage there....

Have made an 'appointment' for Bess to be seen by a garage in Kirkstall (Leeds) to survey the damage.... Saturday morning - I'll let you know how she (and I) get on.....

God, is that all. I only say that as with my Traveller I was told it would be a couple of grand to get it all done, but then my one is pretty holy (in the non religious sense of course).

What will they do for that £250 - weld on little 'MOT' patches - or cut out rusty sections and weld in new panels ?

Judging by most garage repair work I've seen done by garages on Minors at a price, I would say the former of the above two options.

OOoo now I'm nervous... he did say that he was going to cut back and strip back to shiny metal, strip it of waxoyl, etc etc.... it's on the main chassi - so surely panels not involved???

MOT 'patches' are what you do NOT want. You want them to weld in new metal panels - be it floor panels/sill panels whatever is needed. That has the basis of a lasting repair which MOT patches do not!
