Distributor type
How can I tell which Lucas distributor model I have on my car a 1965 1098? Thanks, John

I think all the 1098s use the 25D4.

It should be the 25D4 type with the serial number (stamped on the body)
40849B for high compression and 40899B for low compression.
40849B for high compression and 40899B for low compression.

whether it is a 25D4 or a 45D4, it doesn't matter, that is only the model number. What is important is the number stamped on the body as there are a huge range of distributors of the same model all with slightly or even large differences internally. In other words you can't fit any 25D4 distributor to any engine and expect it to perform correctly.
There is no reason why a 45D4 couldnt be set up to suit a 1098 Minor but it is nopt worth it, in my view.

If you've got a good 45 and a worn out 25, then the 45 is worth fitting. If you've got the electronic Metro one and a 45, and want to do the "cobble 2 together to get leccy ignition on a Minor (or other older Lucas fired car)" then it's worth fitting the 45 (after sticking the electronic bits in). If you've got a good 25, I'd stick with it - The handy adjuster makes it worth keeping IMO

it's only worth fitting a 45 if the advance curve is correct, which is guesswork unless you have the relevant data for that particular unit and the data for the 1098 to hand.
It could be close or it could be miles away in which case performance will suffer, not that a 1098 has much to spare.

My distributor in the car has a duff vacuum. seeing the price for a new advance mech plus its prob worn as well. I bought a 45D not knowing
Havent fitted it yet, will prob sell then and get the 25d.
Looking on ebay these 'New' distributors dont ave the thumbwheel on them
