Applying for a Tax disc online?

Post by JimK »

I've just tried and the Vehicle Licencing website told me that they couldn't find my insurance details in the industry database.

Before I ring Footman James to ask them about it: has anybody done this successfully (for their Minor)? I'd be interested to hear from FJ customers who have.

It worked for me for the Morris, but not for my Rover.

The Morris insurance expires six weeks after the tax is due, whereas the Rover insurance expires the day before, so they never get the updated details through in time.

I've taxed the Rover for six months this year to get round that problem (I hope).

My Morris insurance is with RAC Classic (Toweragte Hall & Clarke), not FJ though.
Cheers, Axolotl.

Hmmm. The tax runs out at the end of this month, and the MoT and insurance around the middle of June. Maybe that's too close for the dreadful Crapita IT system?

Well, if you tax your car at a Post Office, the insurance only has to be valid on the day the tax disc starts, so if your insurance doesn't run out until after you renew the tax disc, it ought to be valid, and o.k. to do on-line.

Maybe there is something wrong in the State of Denmark (sorry, I mean with your insurance record at Footman James / DVLA).

Must take another tablet. :-?

Both Morris & Rover taxed onver the phone at the first attempt, both insured with FJ (at the time). Some insurers are quicker than others at getting data to the MID (Motor Insurance Database), and the rules for insurers have been changed recently to state that they must get these details to the MID system within seven days of policy acceptance or renewal. In my job I'm currently involved in testing changes to just such a system for a well-known insurance company.
Interestingly, this will mean that policies may be lapsed more quickly if you dont renew on time - in future there will be very little unofficial 'grace' period, where you can call up a few days later and renew...

Is there any way of checking on the Motor Insurance Database to see if your insurance details are up to date and correct?

I taxed a Land Rover online that had a classic policy via FJ - no problems for me.
Hopefully FJ can shed some light on it.

Ah yes, but if you go to the post office, you don't get the free envelope and free postage ;-)
