Hinges

The hinges have dropped on my drivers door and Mr Garage Man says it's quite a labourius task, having to remove wings etc. Should I get it done? WHat does it actually entail?

You dont need to remove the wings to change the hinges. Its a case of unbolting the 4 bolts to teh doorpost and the 4 screws on the door which can be a bit of a pain. (impact screwdriver time). then refit and adjust to get the door fit right. You can get oversive hing pins but i think they require the hing to be drilled out (not shure how ect)

Theres another post somewhere about removing the bolts on the door piller.

If it is only the hinges which are worn then,as EDD says,
you can buy oversize hinge pins and drill out the old holes
to give a perfect 'as new' fit. Before you remove the hinges
(do one at a time) mark around the edges so that you have
some idea of their original position. Unfortunately your
mechanic may mean that the actual pillar on which the
hinges are mounted has rotted at the bottom and is moving?
That is a welding job.

He said that you need to reinforce the hinges under the wing so you need to remove the wing to do it. Does that sound like a rotten pillar or just adjusting the hinges?

Yep though you repair the hing piller rather than reinforce it.

You can do an easy chaeck to see if its hinges or piller. Open the door and try lifting the back while looking at the hinges/piller. If the piller moves then its most likely rotten on the back which indeed does need the wing off to replace. If its just the hinges moving then your ok.
