1098 with 948 box? SII gearbox options continued

For those that haven't read my previous posts, I've got a 1098 engine in a SII and was looking to fit a 1098 box, having been warned not to use the 803 (I dont have an 803 engine).

However, I dont want to cut the floor to accomodate the remote change of the 1098 and was hoping to fit the rear casting of the 803 box which incorporates the earlier long stick gear lever.

The rear casting of the 803 will not fit onto the 1098 box without machining. This is because the rear bearing carrier, although the same size and would fit, is different and is stepped out from the box. The 803 casting is very thin at this point and I would not be happy with trying to alter it.

A previous post suggested using a 948 box with the 803 casting. I've looked at one and it seems the better option. The bearing housing is not stepped and it looks as if it will fit straight on. What about selectors?

So, my question is, 1098 engine with 948 box? The rear axle is also 1098 from what I remember. your advice and comments welcome.

the 948 box is not as strong for the larger 1098 engine

It's just the syncro that's not as strong - so as long as you take care with gear changes down the box all should be well!

the 1098 gearbox casing was stiffened to reduce flexing, (to increase bearing life due to the higher torques)
