cleaning regulator contacts

Post by docgibbons »

hi,
i've just bought a new voltage regulator box from ESM, and it comes with the message attached: "clean contact points before fixing to vehicle." can someone tell me what to use to clean them? a cloth? white spirit? WD40?

I'd try putting a piece of paper or card between them and pulling it through while applying light pressure.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

I assume that they are coated with the same sort of preservative waxy
stuff which is used on new points. In that case a wipe with a petrol rag will suffice to remove it.

hi, you're right willie. i phoned the guys at ESM and they said it was coated with anti corrosion preservative, and that a wipe with petrol or white spirit would do it. anyway, it's in and fitted now, so hopefully it will sort out the problem i had, which was sudden and total drain of the battery.

Did you try fitting the regulator I sent you? Because this was removed working from the vehicle. On inspection there ws nothing wrong with it. If you found the battery draining with this installed I'd suggest looking elsewhere for the cause.

If you just wanted a shiny new one then fair enough :)
