Is he sure it is a minor engine?

To tell if its a bigger engine (eg 1275) the thermostat housing points about 30° in the wrong direction. (even without the housing you can tell by the location of the 3 studs)
However it is possible to change the heads between the smaller and larger engines, but if it's all in the same crappy gold overspray it is likely to be the correct head.

If it's the smaller engine (eg from a Minor):
The 948 should have an aluminium plate on the exhaust side of the block a few inches up from the sump flange, and about a third of the way from the timing cover.
The 1098 will have cover plates over the tappet chest - the 948 doesn't. Therefore look under the manifold - if there are no cover plates it's more than likely the 948.

If in doubt - find the engine number and someone may be able to verify it.

Also bear in mind that the goldseal was renowned for leaks etc.. as it was a factory rebuild (failed) engine. As it is also second hand it may well be worn out or faulty - see it running before you part with serious cash otherwise it's not worth more than a worn engine.

If you can't see it running, write a post dated cheque and/or get a receipt that says 'full refund if not in good working order'.
But if it's £peanuts it's not much of a risk.
