What is usually the main reason for having the third (or any other gear) popping out and going into "free" position while driving? It does not happen when I just hold the gearstick in its position.

Knackered gear box. Needs a change of box or total rebuid.
Or hold it in gear.

If you 'hold' it in gear you are just wearing away the bronze selector fork and making matters worse. Gearbox replacement or overhaul required.
