Hyperthetical Clutch question

After a lovely day out yesterday we were toottling down the M27 at a steady 70mph. Even kept up to speed on the hills

Anyway we were pottering along when there was a very short hiccup in our smooth running. Only a second and she was up to speed again afterwards.

When we slowed down and got off the Motorway the clutch sounded as if there was suddenly next to no Carbon bearing left. lots of low sounding grounching. But and heres the weird thing. After about 10 mins of heavy traffic (and me envisiging a totally malackered clutch mecanism) it all quietend down and now sounds like it used to

I am very confused and will be picking up a new Carbon bearing shortly but is this how they normally show up or do they give different symptoms?

As a side note the clutch adjustment is almost at its maximum (ie hard against the thread end)

Paul i have the old clutch from when i did the gearbox swap

all pretty good, looks like it was not very old at all and not put under great strain.

can give you that bearing if thats whats failed, or could sell you the whole thing for a few quid. I'll bring it along tonight if you want?

Clutch at endo of adjustment is not a good thing, but they can often survive like that for a while.
If you noticed a change in the clutch bite point then it may be the bearing loosing a big chunk of carbon.
However as the engine had a hiccup at the same time, this may have been caused by something rattling round in the bellhousing (eek) - if so, the best scenario is a piece of carbon from the thrust bearing. If it was something esle in the bellhousing causing problems then that could be a bigger problem.
