Just been to Halfords to get some engine oil and the only 20W50 oil I could find was the Halfords branded "classic motor oil". The label says "traditional green lubricant", "contains seal swell component". Is costs £14 for 5 litres.
I've bought the Halfords stuff too, and it's been OK in both cars. A local classic bike garage sells both Castrol Classic and Morris oils, so I'll be using them from now on. Nothing against the Halfords oil, but I have a policy of using local businesses wherever possible.
Just always look for the ratings, if they are not there, look on, that is what I do

I too use Asdas finest, or for that matter anything I can get my hands on.
I tend to use either 15/40 or 20/50. Its getting more difficult to find as newer stuff like the zetecs use piddle-thin oils like 5ws and whatnot which would seap out here there and everywhere!
I use Duckhams 20/50, which I get from my local Morris spares supplier in Wigan. Its about £8 or thereabouts, looks and smells like Halfords variety (haven't tasted it though!) - the container is just not as aesthetically pleasing as a tin can!
Sensible choice Dominic, I wouldn't use anything else in either of my classics... no matter how cheap or with ' seal swell ' whatever that's supposed to be
I think the halfords oil would be good for an engine that has done many miles, so that all the rubber seals "swell" and leak less. But I imagine this would create excessive friction in a newly rebuilt engine. I have used it before in a 1098 without any trouble but I did have a massive leak from the crank seal and it made no difference!! Im now rebuilding a 1275 and I wont be using it as I dont think the seal swell will help on a recon engine.
All the above is my opinion only!
