Halfords classic motor oil

Post by Pascal »

Hi,

Just been to Halfords to get some engine oil and the only 20W50 oil I could find was the Halfords branded "classic motor oil". The label says "traditional green lubricant", "contains seal swell component". Is costs £14 for 5 litres.

Does anybody know how good it is?

I use it and it seems to run fine, can't say if it reduces leaks or not

Seems a lot for an oil that has no rating. I buy either a gallon of Morris Magnol for £9 or 5 litres of Silkolene for £10, both SF rated.

I've bought the Halfords stuff too, and it's been OK in both cars. A local classic bike garage sells both Castrol Classic and Morris oils, so I'll be using them from now on. Nothing against the Halfords oil, but I have a policy of using local businesses wherever possible.

If its says Green it sounds like its made by Duckhams which is still available but I only ever see it at larger shows. Comma oil is also fine to use.
Cheers

Just always look for the ratings, if they are not there, look on, that is what I do :D

ASDA and Morrison both sell perfectly good 20W50 oils - probably no 'seal swell' though!

Just always look for the ratings
That's the problem with the Halfords Classic Oil - absolutely no ratings at all.

Have you asked the help desk "what's the rating on this oil?"

(without getting the "20W/50" reply)

I too use Asdas finest, or for that matter anything I can get my hands on.

I tend to use either 15/40 or 20/50. Its getting more difficult to find as newer stuff like the zetecs use piddle-thin oils like 5ws and whatnot which would seap out here there and everywhere!

I use Duckhams 20/50, which I get from my local Morris spares supplier in Wigan. Its about £8 or thereabouts, looks and smells like Halfords variety (haven't tasted it though!) - the container is just not as aesthetically pleasing as a tin can!

Sensible choice Dominic, I wouldn't use anything else in either of my classics... no matter how cheap or with ' seal swell ' whatever that's supposed to be

I think the halfords oil would be good for an engine that has done many miles, so that all the rubber seals "swell" and leak less. But I imagine this would create excessive friction in a newly rebuilt engine. I have used it before in a 1098 without any trouble but I did have a massive leak from the crank seal and it made no difference!! Im now rebuilding a 1275 and I wont be using it as I dont think the seal swell will help on a recon engine.

All the above is my opinion only!
