Bolt-in certainly sounds a lot easier - I got very scared when you guys started talking about welding!! There again, I'm still running lever-arms, but I must admit that she hops, skips and jumps over bumps...

Owen Burton is not exactly renound for being correct!! His book is full of errors and his products are very poorly made.

You will only get stress cracks if you don't spread the loads at the appropriate plates etc. Also if you don't weld it in properly and get a thin run with an undercut into the surrounding body then, yes it may be prone to stress cracking. This is why the 'kits' sold by places like JLH are really over-engineered so that the loads are spread and if welded in PROPERLY are stronger than the surrounding structure.

I would personally feel much better with properly welded in parts rather than bolt in bits which can shear off and rip through the body as the contact points are much smaller so the shear stresses are higher.

The reason that he says that is that (as Gareth says) welding puts most people off, which is why bolt on kits are more popular. It does not make them better, just easier to fit!

If you want to see the quality difference of the kits then have a look at them side by side (as I have done). Comparing JLH's stuff to Owen Burton's makes you smile and then worry about the Owen Burton stuff that you have already fitted to your car!

On my very first minor (where is 494CYC) i used the Owen Burton rear kit and suffered from tears in the floor where the bolts went through.

Owen burton book was good for beginners info but every thing was bodged or a serious compromise.

Lets face it anyone that designs a kit to fit the awfull marina box needs help

People like Chris Street and JLH all recomend shocks as close to vertical.

The more the shock is angled the less effective it is, at 45deg is 1/4 as effective.

This is all relative as if you drive normaly the angled ones are ok as are a set of standard shocks at the front.

But if like me and i expect cam! you are out to defend other moggie owners when you take on the xr2 brigade to show them the error in there ways for blasting the ealderly couple...

you will need proper shock and anti role bars.

the other reason is that people worry about originality and think that a modification kit that can easily be removed will not detract from a car's value.
I wouldn't follow that logic unless you have a concours car, and in which case, drilling holes to bolt stuff on is equally as bad anyway.

oh yes! think turbominor and the camwagon will have to have a meeting in xr2 teritory one day!

My radius arms when to brakets under the seat box with big streagtheners un the seat box under the seat. It was far too hard and un moggie like with them on, off they came and on went adjustable spaxs.

Was fantastic and still felt like a moggie!

basically it's about 'out-racing' the boy-racers who prey on slow cars and elderly drivers..
The other way to show the boy racer the error of their ways is to pay them no attention (they are unlikely to get as embarrassed if you do that, compared to a Minor leaving them for dust... but it seems to work well for me)

Don't get the wrong idea though!! We (well I) don't drive like a loony all the time and act like a boy racer. I like driving my Moggy at Moggy speeds, BUT if a spotty little baseball cap wearing cretin wants to sneer at me for being in an 'old slow car' then I can make him look VERY silly! This works VERY well if he has his 15 year old girlfriend in the passenger seat who he is trying to impress!!

I watched in horror as a black xr2i harrased a lovely old couple in there maroon convertable a few years a go, they kept over taking and then stopping and it felt like my duty to exercise the original turbominor to prove a point..

On the subjet of wife and kids, am expecting my new daughter to come along today or tomorrow so will be another member of the moggie brigarde
