alternator swap

Post by richard.baker707 »

Hello Moggy fans.
I've just read PM's question on the alternator conversion and the answers and recomended web site has answered most of my questions, however after swapping the alternator from my neg earth '57 into my pos earth '63 when I reconnect the battery is it a simple case of swapping the terminals to complete?
thanks for any info.

regards Rich

I don´t think you can run a neg earth alternator on a pos earth car.

The alternator is much more complicated then the good old dynamo

Hi Onne.
I was thinking that instead of going through the trouble rubbing wires and terminals together to change a dynamo to neg earth for modern equipement that swapping the alternator redoing the wires from the regulator and swapping the wires on the battery would be the way to go,just need confirmation on the simplicity of it..

Somehow I think there is a snag somewhere.

I do know that you don´t need a separate regulator box on a (modern) alternator.

I am sure someone will come along and help you out more than I can do at the moment

There is NO regulator with modern alternators. the old ones (11 ACR ?) had a 4TR (transistor) unit and a 6RA (relay) - but it's all inside a modern alternator. You must swap over the battery connections - and swap the coil connections. It would be wise to clean/reset the points in the dizzy and in the fuel pump. And I think you will need to reverse the fuel gauge connections. Also - if you have a wirelss in the car - it will need swapping to negative earth too.
