Gearbox oil

Post by RogerRust »

I know the morris 1000 gearbox runs on engine oil, but Sophie has a sprite box does the same apply. It smelled like ep oil when I drained it, but who knows what the previous owner put in it?

afaik the 948 box had ep oil.
i would think if it was a 1098 sprite then 20/50. i had a sprite box and i used 20/50 and all was ok

The 948 has ep oil in the gearbox? I didn't know that I better check it out before I run it to much with 20/50 in it.
Any one know if the 948 should have EP and if so what weight of oil?

No - it's always been engine oil in the A series gearbox. 20W50 will be fine. However - it may have had EP90 put in to keep it quiet! So check it out carefully.

No, the gbox was very clean The oil looked completely clean and what you can see through the filler looks new.
I was told it was a recon Sprite box and that seems to be true it has the angled g/stick of the sprite rather than the straighter one from the minor. I'm going to stick with 20/50.
