Rear Spring Hangers

Post by stag36587 »

Hi, I have just bought two rear spring hanger chassis repair pieces which also come with additional flat plates. I have 2 questions:

Are these plates welded to the inner wheel arches as supports or are they just repair plates for the arches themselves?

Also, this may just be that the rear of my car has had plate over plate repairs, but does the boot have its own skin, i.e. in addition to the rear inner wheel arches?

Many thanks

No, the boot wall IS the inner wheel arch, no double layers there.

I've written a guide on how to replace rear spring hangers and the relevant part of the inner wing, I was asked to do this by Nick, a chap on my restoration course and occasional visitor here. Hope its of some help.

I would think the "double skin" bits are past bodged repairs.

Fantastic. Thanks for the quick replies and the photos from chickenjohn are excellent help. I will begin to chip away all the extra inner wings on the car!

I have bought complete inner wing replacements plus new wing flanges. I now have the chicken & egg question of whether I replace the entire inner wing before or after the spring hangers? Any views on what to cut out first?

Do the spring hangers first just in case the new inner wings go on slightly off position, you don't want to affect the suspension geometry.

Good luck with the inner wings, they are simply awful for fit, so be prepared to cut them up to fit correctly. If you send me a PM with your email address I'll show you what I mean.

If most of the inner wings are sound, I would just buy repair sections or make up sections for the rotten pieces- there are available seperately or relatively easy to make up.
