Quite right - on my worst mid-Winter journey I get just under 30mpg (3 miles each way to work, choke out both times, hard accelerating to 60mph). Driving around town with a warm engine should be about 35mpg. Motorway runs at an indicated 65mph give 42-43mpg. 26mpg is awful - lets hope your 'sassenach' mechanic has solved the problem - it must be costing you a fortune!

Right, been for a bit of a spin in the old girl (in the fog! ). Since fill-up, the old girl has now done 56 miles.....39 on the motorway and 17 "around town". The fuel gauge is now settled nicely on the 3/4 mark....I'll continue to drive it this week until it's empty once again. (Oh, and the brakes are great!)

If you only get 25mpg there is something wrong- I would suggest a carb re-build. Try a colourtune test and see how rich its running. Minors do not get 25mpg. 40mpg is the norm.
I agree with John something is off song, when mine is used for commuting mainly in mixed town driving including rush hour traffic for a 20 mile return journey I average low 30`s during the colder months.

I've got a Colortune, and think it's brilliant. In fact, I like it so much I'm tempted to get three more, and while away the long winter nights looking at the light show in my engine.
No, really - They are good. I find I don't really need one for a single SU due to practice, but I still use mine every time I have to go near twin carbs or anything that isn't an SU.
Ordered John, thanks very much. I'm off to Glasgow at the weekend (in the Rover!), so any testing will have to wait until a quiet night next week, or perhaps next weekend.

those colour tunes do not give the right reading.....i got one and think its quite crap....its only for a pre set......
i would check that the thottle cable is tight 1st of all and not making it rev any higher than it should or any slack ie so has soon has you touch the pedal it moves it,also check the choke cable is moving back and in the correct postion, i dont know if you have the little pin on the inside of the carb? if you do thats what you should use to set the mixture right,also have you got enough oil in the top of the carb?
get the engine warm and while its running
if you are looking from above the carb turn the mixture screw (right underneath) anticlockwise so it rises up all the way then turn it back 1 full turn and press the pin in slightly until you feel it hit the dampener inside then push a little more and the revs should pick up and then drop back down to normal revs while you hold it , if it drop below average then its to weak and if the revs pick up to much its to rich...
also that the rev screw is correct position and also choke...has they should work together ive seen some which had a large gap in between them that when you pull the choke it doesnt push the rev arm up to give it more revs on a cold start the carb is incorrect set up if this is the case
i would also check that your spark at the plugs is a strong spark and also correct gap setting has if its not a strong spark it wont be igniting the fuel and thus wasting it
obviously their could be many reasons why its using alot of fuel but i would check those items 1st
ideally you should strip the carb down and give it a good clean, you can even buy carb cleaner to help clean it internally and exterior , ive stripped down so many su carbs over the years and always get them working perfect, i hope this information will help you get the problem sorted
Good list Flying! I too have stripped a few SU's, cleaned them and got them working.
The Colourtune does work for my car. I set the mixture with it and took the car to a garage for a mixture test. I'd got the mixture spot on thanks to the colourtune.
Before rushing off to make any orders- make sure you get the right size one- go to a shop with a Minor spark plug and compare the threads.
The final score was 42 : 20 thanks to Johnny's boot...
