Dear all,
I have a 948cc engine in my minor and it is to slow for me....
I would like to have an 1275 or 1098 engine but they are almost impossible to find here in sweden and when they are sold the price is to high.
What I already have is a couple of 1275 allegro engines, 1100 engine(ado16) and three 948cc Minor engines.
On my Minor there gearbox is ribbed type.
My idea would to buy an engine from uk and ship to sweden but since postage would be quite high, it would be good to know what items I do need and what I can use from all the parts that I already have so that weight could be kept to minimum....

What do I need to build an engine?

Only really the cylinder heads are any use to you. - the pistons and rods could be used - but likely to be worn anyway!! If one of your 948 engines is basically in good condition - you could fit the camshaft from the 1100 engine - and the cylinder head from the 1275 engine. This - with a bigger carb - would give you about 50/55 bhp and would make the car go very much better - for very little cash outlay.

The difference is between the early 4.55 diff - and the later 4.22 diff. % wise it's not so very much - and the speddos are never that accurate anyway! Reference my earlier comment on the 948 engine upgrade - you can use the camshaft fom the 1275 engine in the 948 engine. It's the same timing as the 1098 camshft except it is set 4 degrees advanced - which on the bigger engine was found to give better torque and fuel economy. I'm not sure how good it would be on a 948 engine - but I do know the 1098 cam works well in a 948. The 1275 camshaft would need a different oil pump to match the drive end - however the 1275 pump CANNOT be used - it's drive shaft is shorter - you would need one for a later 998 Mini engine. Perhaps just easier to use the 1098 cam after all !
