I put one of those 'Running In' stickers in the rear window when I had the head replaced. Knocked it up on the computer in a matter of minutes. You wouldn't believe the number of people who asked me what it meant...

it would be a good effort to pick up 9 points driving a moggie, but not a bad idea. anyway, thanks for all the advice. i'll try and keep it smooth until the 1000 miles are up, then unleash her full power on those unsuspecting BMWs. how many horses in a 948cc, by the way?

'bout 37 british horse power :)

But that was in 1956 and so probably not quite that much now.

Engine running in procedure: You are mainly bedding the cam and piston rings.

If you have a new cam (especially performance) then it is important to maintain the revs above 2K to 3K, and vary it to bed the cam in for 20 minutes. At low revs the loads on the cam are high and this can wipe out the lobes.

Depending on the piston ring material, bore finish etc running in procedure can vary. But the main point is not to load the engine too much. If the revs are kept too low it can take ages for the rings to bed in.

The best advice is to follow the cam manufctures and piston ring / engine borers recommendations.

In the back of my van "Running In New Engine Please Pass...........while you can! when I was running in my tuned up Fiat motor.

Same story as Gareth above... I had one saying 'Running In - Please Pass' in the back of an old XR2 after having a rebuild.
Someone actually asked 'So.. what are you running in?' as if it were some kind of race!!
What would Macgyver do..?
