Ban On 'OLD' cars

Post by Willie »

I read that Edinburgh council is to ban old cars on its roads which do not
meet 'green' targets!! That would obviously include our Minors but I wonder if any council can ban cars which have passed the MOT tests and
the phrase Human Rights comes to mind as a last resort.

"There are suggestions that registered classic and historic vehicles could be exempted from the scheme,"
Lets hope so!

Thats why if you're reading this you should join the national Morris Minor club and thereby support the FBHVC who lobby the EU and our government to stop all this nonsense. At least for genuine classics. Hopefully the cut off date will co-incide with the end of 1972 and Morris Minors will be safe from this rubbish legislation.

Ban

I read it in the Auto Express issue number 943. Very brief 'snap' item
though.

What about modern classics though? Let's not forget that our Minors were all once "old rust buckets" as the Scotsman article put it.

I agree with Willie - this strikes me as particularly unfair as the car must have passed an MOT test which includes an emissions check appropriate to the age of the vehicle. Do these people not understand that reductions in emissions mandated on newer cars will naturally filter through to older ones, as long as they're patient.

When I went to Edinburgh about 2 years ago the air quality seemed fine anyway. It's busses that give off the worst stench!

Maybe we all need to work a little to make sure these things don't happen.

Edinburgh City Council has in recent times become anti cars of all ages. A couple of years ago the Council held a referendum on a congestion charge that was rejected by over 75% of those of us who voted. The Council then retaliated by putting in place an unworkable one way system and closing various roads at set times durring the day. This plan failed and even the police did not bother to enforce some of the plan as daily gridlock was the result. The Council backed down, completed a masive U turn and changed the plan again. Even the taxis drivers did not know what was open, closed, one way or taxis and buses only.

I do not feel that the council is objective about bus services in the City as they own the largest bus company that operates in Edinburgh. The bus service is actually very good, offers very good value and is run at a profit.

Edinburgh is not a good city to drive in and parking is even worse. If anyone is visiting Edinburgh which is a fantastic city I would recommend take the train in or use the park and ride.It will save your clutch.
The center of the city is then compact and you can walk and enjoy the buildings and the brewery!

All that needs to happen is have a Festival of old cars and the Council will welcome us all with open arms- they are suckers for any type of Festival.

On the subject of having a Scottish Prime Minister - Mr. Blair was educated in Edinburgh somthing the locals seem to have memory problems with.

The last two Transport Ministers have been Scottish so they make policy for England that does not make a diffference to the people that elect them and send them to Westminster as the Scottish Parliment has its own powers over transport policy. That is the democracy that we have today in the UK. We voted for that didn't we?

Thought it sounded like a free promotional advert, especially the bit about the festival of old cars.... ironic when they are wanting to ban them

British Prime Minister. Lets not have a division here...we are all in the same boat! ....If Edinburgh does go ahead with their proposed plan (and going on their past history, they will) then i really will feel sorry for the classic owners within their area...but remember this...if they do get their way on this issue....then it could be your town next!!! So please, lets not have any division on these issues...lets stick together and try defeat them, after all, we all on here have a common interest.
