Seatbelts

Post by paulhumphries »

Sorry, I know they are "period" items, but I cann't cope with the original Kangol magnetic seat belts in my 2 door and need inertia type.
I know all the dealers have ones suitable in stock but can anyone tell me (maybe from an old application guide ?) what other cars have the same seatbelts as a 2 door Minor ?
I'm not after secondhand but rather want to be able to buy a "bargain" if I see then at autojumble, eBay etc.
I suspect, due to fitment in Minor, that something like a sports car (MGB, Midget, Spitfire ?) might be applicable.

Hi Paul Securon are the most commonly current fitted ones.
If you use their website you will find that it lists 500/45 as the right model number but you will find this is really for the 4 door and Traveller models and makes it a bit short for the 2 door cars & convertibles, if you contact one of the specialists I believe the correct model is 514/30.
So to assist your search
500/45 includes
Morris Oxford 59 - 71, Morris 1800 66 - 75, 1100 - 1300 all years, Maxi 69 - 81.
514/30 includes
TR 4,5,6,7, MG Midget 64 - 81, MGA 57 - 62, MGB 62 -81.
This should keep you busy for a while.
Cheers

Old man s*d intervenes again. :(

I bought some, new, seatbelts off eBay - and they are too short.
I've unwound them today and measured the length of the strap - 280mm.

Looking on the Securon web site the recommened seat belts 500/45 have stalks 45mm and strap 314m long.
I reckon these would fit.
The alternative that Kevin suggests are 514/30 with stalk 30mm and strap 270mm long.
The Metro ones people say fit are 500/30 - stalk 30mm and strap 314mm long.

I'm now confused.

What have other peole, fitted to a 2 door and find they are long enough ?

Paul Humphries.

BTW (i) the ones I've already bought aren't going to be wasted as they are perfect for fitment to the rear.

BTW (ii) I can get 500/30 (30mm stalk and 314 strap) for £27.19 each including VAT from so will probably use these idc. They are same as Metro but from Land Rover dealer -
http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/SERIES/ ... cles..html
Stalk is a little short but I'd already made some adapter bracket for the short stalks with the ones I'd bought.

Paul the inertia belts are only £24:50 for the 4 Door version and I think the 2 Door version is only a £5 more if I remember from the Minor specialists, rather that but the Metro ones buy the correct ones.

Fair comments but which are CORRECT version for 2 door ?
The ones shown on Securon web site - 500/45 ie 45mm stalk and 314mm strap or what you suggested originally 514/30 which are acutally shorter at 30mm stalk and 270mm strap.
My opinion is the 514/30 are for the 4 door and 500/45 for two door but I'd like feedback for someone who says they have bought version "*" and it fits.
Also why different length stalks for 2 & 4 door ?

My four door has trafficators so the top seat belt anchor. Can either be too high so that it rubs the neck or too low so that it falls off.

What I am wondering is if it posible to make a drop bracket with a hole at the top and a captive bolt at the bottom so that the belt mounts about half way down the top half of the pillar (if that makes sense).

Any ideas??

Roger,

My 4-dr also has trafficators and seems to have the sort of bracket which you describe. It bolts in above and below the trafficators and has a stud sticking out about half-way up that the belt bolts to. I don't know who made/makes them though.

Thats what I had in mind. I have some vinyl to match the seats so I plan to cover them so it looks original. Any one going to offer to make me a pair? Actually I think I might do it myself. Or do you think stainless steel would look nice?

Hi Paul the best thing is to speak to one of the specialists and they will explain why there are 2 different ones and exactly which kit is correct for your car.
Cheers
