Historical (in)accuracy

Post by simmitc »

Another wonderful example of television getting it wrong. Just seen Heartbeat where some chap is up to no good fiddling under the bonnet of a Traveller. Disturbed, he runs off and the female mechanic looks in the engine bay to diagnose that "the brake cable's been cut". No sexists comments, it's the script writer, producer, director, researcher, etc at fault. Why can;t they get it right?

Absolutely, so it wouldn't have hurt them to have "pipe" in the script. Incidentally, for the shot with the cutters, there was a second pipe running parallel to the one from the m/c to the brake light switch. I gues that they didn't want to have to renew the real pipe !

My diagnosis: avoid watching Heartbeat :-)

I watch almost no TV at all, there's almost nothing worth watching.

yeah Heartbeat is a good show, can't believe the pettiness to run into post a rant about a telly program being inaccurate. hope he knows the program is fictional.

I'm with simmitc on this, its the details like "brake cable" etc that completely ruin fictional TV programmes show for me. The only things I can bear to watch are factual TV programs. I think the problem is with the quantity of TV needed nowadays to fill all the satellite channels- the quality has gone out of the window.

Plus Heartbeat has destroyed a number of classic vehicles over the years, some irreplaceable, rare and in good condition. Even if the program was any good, this wanton destruction would keep me away from it.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Perhaps a subtle script writer - the female mechanic intentionally getting it wrong - the poor actor not realising !!

I sometimes wonder if its done to get people disssusing the programme, but I agree its annoying, but it still wont stop me watching as I like a bit of nostalga :D

Don't give up on the these progs, lads!
Do as I do and point out at length their errors to the assembled throng. There're some real howlers, like Captain Thingy having just driven Poirot a hundred miles and the Lagonda still smoking and steaming 'cos its just been started and driven on to the set. Or the same taxi turning up to collect Poirot where ever he is be it, London, Brighton or Bag-End. Another technique is to shout a the telly advice like OH NO ITS NOT or YOU'VE GOT THAT WRONG, HAVEN'T YOU.

The present Mrs Nash then shouts GET OUT and I duck and weave to the door avoiding the flying coasters and sweets. Gentlemen, its your privilege and I urge to exercise it. MikeN.
Morris Minor, the car of the future. One day they will all look like this!
