tightness on tappet chest covers

how tight are they supposed to be? tight, hand tight, very tight.........welded shut?

Rocker cover should be very low torque - thought it was less than 15, but it's late and I'm too tired to look it up.

I've never worried too much about the tappet chest bolt torque as the covers are pretty solid so I've done them up untill the gaskets look squashed enough (they don't need to be very squashed!)

The manual says 2 ft lb. I would guess that is just beyond finger tight.

Nipped up only - otherwise they distort (especially the early cork gasket ones) and leak horribly.

i have the neoprene gaskets, and 2ft/lb seems not tight at all and the neoprene gaskets seem quite tough. is it okay to go ttighter

Yes - just 'nip' them up to what seems a sensible tightness.

Not sure if you are aware, but the centre bolt should have a concave washer fitted, into which a rubber 'o' ring is placed. This is designed to stop oil leaking from around the bolt.

Theres a big notice at our GPs that says if theres any tightness in the chest you should call 999 immediately
