Exhaust

Post by gordiechris »

Does anyone have any tips on how i can put my exhaust back together. My exhaut has two piece's, the main manifold and one long section from the manifold to the rear. The problem I have is that where the manifold meets the rear section the flared part of the rear section has broken off.
I am due to sell the car soon and dont want to splash out on a new system.

Please help....

Cheers
Chris

I'm presuming you mean you have a standard Minoe 2 piece exhaust.
These have a join close to the engine bay.
If the flared piece has snapped off, there are a couple of options:
1) your local tyre/exhaust place can usually supply short lengths of oversize tub that will fit snugly over a standard exhaust pipe size (I'm not 100% sure that a Minor exhaust is compatible with todays 'standard sizes')
2) get the broken piece welded back on. Gas welding would be better as it is less likely to crack in the futuure, but decent Mig welding will be ok. This presumes the metal isn't rotted away!!!
3) chase around suppliers to get just the front piece (if possible) rather than a complete system
4) buy a complete exhaust - they aren't expensive and it's another selling feature.

Stick on a new stainles system - anything else is just a bodge, and the new exhaust will boost sale-ability.

This happened to me many years ago whilst a long way from home so I sat
by the roadside and gradually flared the broken piece of pipe until it matched
the manifold. It eventually fitted nicely and was leak free until I sold the car.
