What happened to the old Mark 1 eyeball?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

I've not yet invested in an alignment tool.
I used to use a wooden valve lapping tool and would electrical tape around the handle until it was a snug fit with the mating parts.
After I lost that moving house, I downgraded to a wooden spoon handle!!
The wooden spoon handle diameter was a bit small so it also required a bit of eyeball #2 (or a tape measure) to ensure that the spoon handle is sitting smack in the middle of the clutch cover fingers/bearing.

alignment
I too have used the wooden handle of the standard valve grinding tool with
tape around it successfully for many clutches.
