Difficult with the plugs out!! Ideally you could have used some form of de-scaler before the plugs were taken out. I wouldn't worry about it - dig out any obvious sludge as best you can - then bang in new plugs - and give it a good flushing when it's all back together. If it's any comfort - i have never heard of an A series engine rusting out!

My engine builder has his motors acid dipped by the same place that dips our cars. You would not believe how well they come up and the waterways are restored to near the original . The benefit of being able to clean every inch of the head is that they run much cooler. If you are interested I can obtain a price from SPL

Phil 63, I can't see a flaw in Mr.Eccosse's method. When I had over heating problems i thoroughly flushed and back flushed my cooling system, once using a two stage flush by Holts. The cooling is incredibly efficient and require a large amount of the radiator to be blanked in order to warm up in a reasonable time.

I thought that was the kind of thing that engine builders do. Apologies in advance if I'm being extraordinarily thick, but what am I missing here?bmcecosse wrote:Acid dip (probably Skalene or similar) is all very well, but then it would need reboring and new camshaft bearings !
