Distributor prolems- can anyone help?

Post by alfrednewall »

I am having some problems with my distributor I found last weekend when starting her up, a rather strange grinding noise. Initially i thought it was the starter motor but when listening carefully i realised it was coming from the distributior. Now when the starter is pulled the distributor makes a spinning noise, maybe slighly restricted, but does not fire up the engine at all. Quite worrying, I would appriciate any ideas. Thankyou.

Everyone seems to have ignored you! First off - remove the dizzy cap and inspect the internals - any damage to be seen ? It would be very unusual - but just possible - the rotor arm has come apart or has somehow tangled with the cap especially if the cap has not been fitted correctly. Withe the cap off and rotor arm exposed - what happens when you crank it - does the rotor arm go round ?

Ahh - but no result so far except we now know it's going round! Does it still make the noise with the dizzy cap removed ?
