Replacing brake master cylinder, but with what?

I do teach, and I still have that problem. Sometimes I feel the more I explain something the less likely some students are to understand :-)

Do you mean that with discs you get better braking for the same swept area? Or that for a given brake fluid pressure you get higher pad-disc friction and hence better braking? (Part of my job is working out what delegates are really trying to find out when they ask a question :-))

I'm totally sold on discs - there's a really good reason why every single car sold today has discs at least on the front, and that's because they stop better for longer.

I'd say the latter of your interpretations is close to what I actually mean.

but I couldn't grasp Jonathan's comment about clamping pressure so I wasn't sure...
Jonathon meant that the disc pads work by using a clamping action onto the discs, brake shoes work by an expanding action against the drums, 2 completly different actions.
