top trunnion bushes

Is it possible to put new bushes in the top trunnion in situ?

If you mean - jack up car under suspension arm, remove road wheel (after first loosening wheel nuts with car on ground), take off nut on top trunnion mounting, swivel trunnion away from top arm, take out old bushes and replace, then yes.

I've always had to fit a new pivot pin as well. Either I muller the old one getting it out of its tapper or it so corroded it would spoil the new bushes.

Yes - it's not exactly as easy as suggested above (but the method is exactly correct - it just misses out the levering/swearing/bashed knuckles etc!) - but it is certainly possible. This is an area where polyurethane bushes are very well worth fitting.

Didn't think the question asked for the 'pain element' - (never found it difficult though) perhaps we should have a numbering system for pain expected when doing work on a minor

Heh-heh - it's just the need to lever the wretched thing round about the pin - which of course saves the need for a new pin which RR fits. One side I found very difficult - the other side was relatively easy. I have NEVER been able to get the pin out of the damper arm!
