I fitted an Owen Burton kit a few years ago, it came with new hubs, calipers, brackets, pads, discs, nuts/bolts, hoses and backing plates; I also had to remove one of the seals from inside the master brake cylinder.

Not sure really haadesaus, but as the kit contained new hubs machined out of billet complete with bearings, so I’m guessing the moggy hubs are not suitable, the caliper mounting brackets were specially made, as were the backing plates, the hoses are moggy the ford ones too.

That does seem to be a 'standard' conversion - but it usually means using the ghastly Marina wheels because the pcd is different. There are ways round that of course - but tend to be costly.

I think that unless someone has designed and machined their own hubs, then the only people who will have an engineers drawing will be the designers of the kits. We only sell complete kits and would under no circumstances share the drawings of our hubsor any other componrnts, sorry!! :D
The Marina/Ital kit was one of the original kits available, but there were two types of kit. One used a modified minor hub and the other replaced the stub axle with the Ital one and then fits the original hub with original bearings.
There are currently two Ford disc brake kits available, the old Owen Burton kit now sold by MMC Bath/ESM and our own kit. The OB kit used to use the Sierra discs, not sure if they have now opted for the Escort, and ours, which use the Escort solid or vented versions

Thanks for the pointer Kim - and useful drawing of the caliper bracket too ! I'm sure a version of that can be used for many other makes of caliper.

Is anyone interested in an translation of the danish polo-disc-conversion. A friend of mine translated it to german for me, so if you are interested, I will give it a try and translate it to english?!

Instruction

Post by Bengt »

Here is a translation of the danish manual to adapt a VW-Polo brake to a Morris Minor. It should be read in conjunction with the pictures and drawings posted on the following website: http://www.nmmk.dk (go to the link "Morris Minor Skivebremser" on the right side of the page):

Fitting VW Polo disc-brakes to the Morris Minor
Instruction written by: Chr. Rask. Mail : rasknielsen@vebspeed.dk

After doing quite a lot of research I finally found out, that the discs and the calipers of the Volkswagen Polo 1.1 (1975-1981) will be suitable to convert the Morris Minor to disc brakes.

The discs fit the hubs exactly and the calipers can be fitted to the Minor with the specially machined mounting brackets.

Various tests showed an 20% improvement of braking power over the standard drums.

Fitting instruction:

1) Dismantle the drum, shoe, hub and backplate (Fig. 1)
2) Put the discs on the Minor hub and drill a 4,5 mm hole in the hub, where the securing screw of the discs is located. Use a 5mm tap to tap the new thread (Fig.2)
3) Use the specially machined mounting bracket to fit the caliper on the Minor swivel pin (Fig. 3)
4) Attach the disc and the caliper together with the brakepads (Fig. 4)
5) Connect the calipers to the standard brakepipes using a flexible brakehose
6) Bleed the system

Naadeslaus,
I fitted a set of Sierra Cosworth RS500 discs and calipers to my Moggy (there are some picys on the site somewhere). I had to get some hubs machined to do it. You'll be better off getting one of the aftermarket kits. As they are based on Ford discs and calipers you can probably use an aftermarket Ford kit to further upgrade from there if you wanted to.

I also have some info somewhere about adapting the Marina based kit to accept BMW discs.

Regards,
Wal
