hardner for 2K paint

Hi all, I went to do some touching up at the weekend with the 2K paint and hardener supplied in little tubs by the last body shop that I went to (so it matches perfectly). Trouble is I had stupidly not sealed the hardener tin and its all gone hard! I only need a thimble full but can't buy the stuff. Anyone got any spare? I can pay for tin/materials and postage

You could just not read it

You live in London and can't find a paint factor (seller of automotive paints)??

They must be like wassaname in a field

Any cheap and cheerful universal activator will work in your 2K paint. Half a litre will be about £15.

It doesn't have a very long shelf life and once opened will solidify fairly quickly, however much you tighten the lid.

Kirsten,
You will be okay to just use the paint alone if its touching in stop chips and the like with a brush. The paint will cure, but obviously take a deal longer than if activated.

2 questions:

1. nebogipfel: will any activator work with my 2K paint? For sure?

2. Jonathon: yep, its for stone chips, how long will it take to cure and will it eventually cure hard enough to be able to flat it back a bit? ie: will it cure as hard as it would have done with the hardner?

For tip ins any 2K hardener will do, but if you are going to spray just tell the paintstore what make of paint you have, just incase there are any issues.
The paint less hardener will dry hard and will flat back. A few hours will be enough but let it dry hard for around a week.
I'd try a bit on some scrap metal, just to convince yourself and determine a drying time.

I use 2k less hardener for top up - no problem seems to touch dry in a couple of hours.

If you are doing a proper 2K paintjob then you should always use the whole system from whatever manufacturer you choose.

- The products should give predictable consistent results

- If you have a problem, you can legitimately go back to the manufacturer for back-up.

That said, in the trade for cheap in and out jobs we often use universal activators and mix brand names without problem.

I have not yet, (touch wood) had a problem

Jonathon is correct, it will air dry but it is preferable to activate 2K paint for touch-ins of any size
