bearings going or ceased brake shoe ?!

I hope for a broken brake shoe !

That would be unusual and if it did happen the noise would be quite loud as you would have springs and everything rattling around along with a loss of breaking as the cylinders would pop out, I think you can totally disreguard this as a likely problem.
The shhh shhh sound, sounds like a possible brake shoe rubbing as if it is not releasing properly, Willie had a similar problem but I dont know what sounds he was getting, and he had to replace the wheel cylinders as the rubbers had swollen (if I remember correctly)

Whatever it is you will have to take the drum off and have a look. It maybe just a broken spring. But you won't know 'till you have a look see.

Is the handbrake still sharp? If the cable is severely corroded if will prevent the handbrake releasing, (keeping the brake on) But you won't know 'till you have a look see.....
Sounds aren;t always easy to pinpoint. If you don't see something obvious, then check the brakes/bearings on the other wheels.

When was the axle oil level last checked / topped up?

Kevin, Yes, I had the front brakes only failing to release.
As a final update I still had a scraping noise when everything
was warmed up despite having renewed all four wheel cylinder
rubbers.(this improved matters but did not completely cure
the sticking). The cure was only made by fitting four NEW wheel cylinders. I thing the lesson is that if you start to get
trouble with wheel cylinders, do not waste money on new
rubbers, fit new cylinders straight away.
