Taxation class: NOT LICENSED

Post by alex_holden »

My Traveller was off the road for at least 15 years before I bought it, and the previous owner lost the registration certificate. I sent off for a replacement when I got the car and they sent me a V5C showing a taxation class of "NOT LICENSED" instead of the expected "HISTORIC VEHICLE." I've got the MOT and insurance sorted out now, so I took the relevant paperwork, including a V10 form, to the local post office. The attendant gave me the V10 back and said I didn't need it, scratched his head a bit over the taxation class, showed it to the other attendants who also didn't know what it meant, then scanned the barcode on the V5C into his computer. I don't know what the computer told him, but he then filled out a tax disc with NOT LICENSED in the taxation class box, and gave it to me - no charge - with a receipt for £0.00 that says on it "Scheme: Licence-Old MOT/Exempt."

Anyone else encountered this?

No but mine is showing PLG at the moment - I was told by DVLA I can't change it until I apply to tax it. So I will try and change it to Historic then.

I think I'll wait and see what happens when I come to renew it next year - just hoping the police don't stop me in the meantime because their ANPR says it's "not licensed" or something...

the post office will probably get their fingers slapped for that.

You need to send off your documents (including V5C, MOT and insurance) to your nearest DVLA local office (or take them with you) and they will update your V5C with 'Historic Vehicle' and issue the tax disk showing a valid category.

As you already have a tax disk, you could just do it by post. I've always been impatient and had to take time off work to get this sorted at DVLA local office (only open during normal working hours).

I've got the same to look forward to once (if ever) I get Mirium finished, she is down as PLG on her V5C. So looks like a day trip to Worcester once she's MOT'd.

I was hoping to avoid that as it means either entrusting my precious bits of paper to the whims of Royal Mail or spending most of a day going to Manchester and back. I might try posting them though - I suppose they can be replaced if they get lost.

it is no problem for the dvla to change the taxation class, i had to do it on a van, it only took 2 weeks for them to sort it out with the correct tax disc.
that was by post as well
