Squeaky suspension

Hi, I have a 1956 Series 2 convertible and recently the suspension started gently squeaking noticable only when you drove along the road. This didn't concern me too much as it is due a service soon so I assumed this would cure it. However, the other day I left it out in the rain and after a good soaking (inside & out !) the squeaking has gone, so I assume it was dust etc. My question is does anyone have any idea what may have been causing this and how best to cure it in future other than leaving it in the rain !

PS - The squeaking seemed to be coming from the rear suspension, if that helps.

You do grease your supsension every 1500 (?) miles don't you?

I'd say have a good look at ALL the bushes in the suspension, front and back.

Ideally the suspension needs dismantling and greasing with some white grease putting on all the bushes and then reassembling,or as a quick fix could try spraying with Duck Oil.

Where do you get "white grease" from? Is that the same as lithium grease? that would rot the bushes, do you mean rubber grease, as used in brakes?

I too have a squeaky rear end

, OK when just me in the car, but with passengers or a load (even shopping in the back) and the RHS rear spring creaks.

I got a spray can of white grease from Halfords (it's not the same as lithium grease). It cured the squeak from my rear spring poly bushes.

I thought white grease was.....'white lithium grease'. I know its recomended for poly bushes but I don't think it would be suitable for rubber bushes. WD-40 perhaps?

My workshop manual says to use Castrol LM grease for all grease points, which is pale grey. I don't know if that's what's meant by "white grease", but it's what I use.

Why does the maual say to use it if it rots rubber bushes?

The previous owner has used something that looks a lot like Castrol Moly, the dark grey stuff.

But the rubber suspension bushes are not part of the grease points referred to in the service shedule.

It generally only needs to be done when changing them for new ones.

Thanks for the tips guys.

As for greasing every 1500 miles, my annual milege is about 1200 so I tend to leave it to the yearly service. Plus I'm a bit lazy !!

Having a fairly long flexible hose for the grease gun helps, I can reach all my grease points without removing wheels or jacking the car.
