I guess you're right Ray. The frequency of leaky Ford engines is probably more down to the number of people who buy them as a 'cheap' car and treat them with contempt. I always harp on about VW quality _ I've never had a duff engine from that marque, but then I chose my cars well. My sister had a 82 Golf that had a garden sprinkler fitted in place of the tappet cover.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

lol
I have a proffessional opinion on VW's that would put me off buying a new model until it is 2 or 3 years in production (normally just wary for the first year with most European VM's). It depends which engineers have control, as there are also some good guys at VW.
Out of the handfull of vehicle manufacturers I've worked with, I'm happy driving a Honda, but out of every type of car there'll always be one that's a Lemon.
And despite my Minor's leaky tendencies, I'm still happy to run the original drivetrain - basic but it always starts and always gets me home.
Right I'll shut up now as we're way of the original thread...

Oil leaks are a touchy subject for me - my Minors have ruined my drive despite being parked over big hardboard sheets.
Ray if yours leaks that much, maybe you should perhaps try a product called `The Protex A Mat`
Its suppost to absorb 25 x its own weight of oil, petrol etc its 5ft x 3ft and is washable, its advertised in Practical Classics page 132 october issue, they are called Allapatah Enterprises Tel/Fax 020 8891 0201, and they are based in Twickenham, Middx.
Cheers

Thanks Kevin.
The problem with the hardboard has been that if I don't park in the right position, some of the drips have missed. My 2 boards come to a total of 2.5 feet by 11 feet.
It's a long way from the timing chain cover to the back axle, so all together I have missed the board at the front, back, left and right.

A washable mat sounds very good - I will consider that as it could go in the boot allowing me to park on friend's drives if I'm away for the weekend.

I said I'd check and feed back after I'd rechecked.
Well there is NO OIL in the air cleaner! So thanks again!
Looks like just 'cause the part looks the same and fits it will be right!
