Rear Hub Nut

Can anyone tell me the size of the rear hub nut on a 1098.

Dunno Ian - it's too big for any of my spanners - I'm afraid I hit it with a hammer and chisel !

Yes - 1 1/8" Whitworth. Fortunately I still have one from years ago, but you can always don the straw boater and striped apron and use a hammer and chisel instead. Apologies if you already know but don't forget the left side is a left hand thread!

Yes :oops: I did the it using the 'calibrated' hammer and chisel method too (did one 2 weeks ago) - it is not too difficult and at least no-one will see it unless they get to know the car as well as I do :lol:
By that time they should be 'very well aquainted' and the sight of a chisel mark won't be the worst thing they've seen :lol:

Must confess to using the hammer and chisel/punch method myself on occasion on other fixings. Not exactly "best practice" but sometimes needs must!
It will be hard to find larger Whitworth size sockets etc. now except possibly at the odd autojumble or car boot sale.

Is this spanner the right size?

I measured the nut to be about 1 7/8" AF but can't find one of those.

I dont think a box spanner will be strong enough.
Harrymango or Rog had some sizes available recently for bargain prices.

I used to use a box spanner on my Land Rover without any trouble - if a box spanner is no good then I'm into very expensive socket territory:

Or hammer & chisel, which I managed to use to remove the nut, but now I'm having trouble getting it back on because I need to crank the bearing back onto the shaft, and it's an extremely tight fit (it took an hour and an improvised puller setup to get it off).

They're open ended. I suppose it might work in this case since the hub nut doesn't need a huge amount of torque, but I try to avoid open ended spanners wherever possible, having rounded off far too many bolt heads in my time.

Back to the original question - can anyone confirm that a 1 1/8" Whitworth nut has a 1 7/8" AF head? To put it another way is a 1 1/8" Whitworth spanner definitely the right size for the rear hub nuts on a 1963 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller? I've found some tables of Whitworth head sizes on the net but they don't go that high.

Edit: I meant to write 1 1/8" not 1 1/4".

Aha. I've found the information I was looking for here:

1 7/8" AF is (obviously) 1.875"
1 1/8" Whitworth is (not obviously) 1.860"

Close enough.

In my experience the rear hubs slide quite freely onto the axle stub - never had to use a puller to get one off - or had any difficulty re-fitting. Check for any 'burrs' or damage on the stub casing.

There were no burrs, but you could see the scuff marks on the inside of the bearing race where it had rubbed against the shaft when pulling it off. I suspect poor manufacturing tolerances are to blame. I hope the other side isn't as bad.

The other side was as badly jammed as the first one. I'm tempted to try polishing the part of the axle stub the bearing sits on to make them go back on easier.
