SEAT BELT LAW??

Post by annegardner »

I have jusy got a saloon first registered 12/3/65. Can anyone tell me if I need seat belts? There are none fitted and it has an MOT. I assumed there was no legal reqt then, but now I have inspected the car, there seem to be mounting points , so I am wondering if they were removed by t he previous owner, and its therefore illegal not to have them?
Thanks, Anne

I think your car, like mine, was made after they started fitting mounting points, but before they were fitted as standard and before there was a legal requirement to have them. They're about £50 for a pair from the specialist suppliers.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

August '65 is the cut-off point as far as the MOT is concerned. It's not illegal to remove seat belts fitted to a car made before that date.

Thanks Alex and Chris, I am hoping so. I think having looked at the RoSPA website they were req'd as factory fittings from 1967. Can anyone else confirm?

Whether they are legally required or not,I would strongly advise that you fit a pair.....!

ESM would be your best bet but make sure you state the model and year because there has been a 'thing' with seatbelts being to short!

Thats right the 2 doors saloons & convertibles require a longer belt due to the position of the upper mounting.
Cheers
