Rusty engine bits

I have found couple of engine bits in my garage that have suface rust on them.whats the best to clean the off, so no bits end up in the engine/water wayerways.

just asking cos found a cylinder head thats got surface rust. would jet washer be good with a good doseing of WD-40

Depends where the rust is - if it's the mating face with the block then unless it's very light surface rust you would really need to get it skimmed flat and smooth. Otherwise - probably ok to use it after thorough cleaning - valves obviously need cleaning up in leccy drill - and seats would need grinding in - if the guides are rusty then would need new guides.
