Is it possible for the flasher unit to 'fail' in such a way that right indicator works but when indicating left all four indicator lights flash as if in hazard mode?

Because that's what has started happening. I guess it's either the indicator stalk or the flasher unit but not the wires as that would make both left and right do 'hazard' mode.

if you have the normal 3 pin flasher unit aand wiring, then it has to be the switch/wiring - it certainly can't be the flasher unit.
My guess would be the switch - as you said already if it was wiring then they would always flash together, not just when indicating left.

Can't see it being the flasher - That only puts the power through in pulses, it's the switch that decides where the pwoer goes.
