Chatting with a Rover service manager today, he cannot see a reason why the 1275 out of the Maestro's cannot be modded to fit a Moggy.

It only needs the backplate changing with the front plate changed for the engine mounts.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed elsewhere.

Has he ever seen it done though??

Best check the flywheel and crank first before parting with any money.

If this is the case, then please let us know as you may have opened up another source of 1275 engines (plenty of scrap Maestros about!).

Surely the Maestro has the same crankshaft/flywhel arrangement as a Metro/Mini ? Therefore same answer - Not economically.

Ian,

We mentioned this before. It does not have an underslung gearbox, but a side mounted VW gearbox, so it may or may not have the correct crank / flywheel arrangement - no-one can say for sure yet.

I shall pop into the Rover dealers tomorrow and check flywheel/crank part No.s against inline A+ series lumps.

spoke to edwards in stratford and they said the part numbers from ital to maestro are different. But to my eye the one i helped pull out looked the same

There could be a dimentional difference although they may look similar, I am also interested in this possibility and like others will post if I find the truth! To be honest I was suprised/hopeful to hear that the flywheel was held by 6 bolts as opposed to a taper, as used on the Mini etc.

I have supplied my local tame auto machiner with back plate and fly wheel to try and mate up to a 1275 lump out of a maestro. I should be able to let every one know by tomorrow evening.

Thing is, if the flywheel doesn't fit is it the end of the world? a VW flywheel clutch gearbox conversion isnt too far out of the equation is it?

Probably not, it's just finding an in-line one one that's not too tall (steering rack clearance) or long.

I think you will find that moggyman is now longer with us he only had his car a short while and then moved on to something else

I meant that the individual concerned ( Lee and his Moggie Pidge) who made the Maestro remarks that offended you ( I dont think so really ) are no longer on this message board as he only had his car a short time and then sold it and moved onto other things, his words not mine.

Oh, I see! You're right - I wasn't really offended. I've got used to "Maestro comments" from my colleagues, friends, family, garage, etc, etc!

The backplate fits the A+ block of the Maestro, unfortunatley the crank has 6 studs to fix the flywheel to, so unless people want the hassle of stripping and fitting a 1275 Midget/Marina crank thats the end of this story.

A modified flywheel is available from the heritage approved Bath minor centre now based at bradford-on-avon (to which I fully recomend them, excellent customer service). the flywheel is a moggie one but has been modified to six holes for use on the Marina/Ital 1300 engines so maybe this would work on the Maestro engine? It's £28 +vat exchange, which is very reasonably priced if it works when you think about it.
