Engine rebore ..
So for anyone who's been following this ..
I've got a very low mileage engine that was left for a few years and had seized very solid.
When I unseized it it was questionable as to wheteher it was just new rings or a rebore and pistons.
Origionally I was just going to do rings. When I tried to take the rings off they were stuck fast .. Father in law reckons that the owner used some horrible "Stop smoke" thing to bind up the rings. Given that it can't have been burning oil this was a little bit silly.
So .. I found reboreing shop locally .. and am going to take it over there (£140 for rebore and pistons in case you were wondering)
I've stripped the block almost compleately the only things left are the Oil pressure sender and the oil pressure relief valves.
1. Will they reject the block because of these bits ?
2. Should I tape up all the other oilways ? (and orafices generally)

there's a fair chance that they will soak the block in their degreaser overnight before working on it so tape may not be any use (best to check)
Usually a block will come back full of swarf unless something else is agreed beforehand.

Ah - I forgot to mention - it is now 10 years since I last had a rebore done so my info could well be out of date... (I wouldn't want to state conjecture as fact ;-) )
They may have banned most of the engine cleaning processes these days
and doesn't 10 years go very quickly when you have endless Minors to fix!

The rings may come loose if you soak them in say Coca Cola - worth a try - and does the block really need reboring - not just new pistons ? Remove the oil sender and the relief valve - and be prepared to give it a good wash out when it comes back.
There are plenty of degreasing systems still about these days, that's a fact.

I know this sounds obvious but shouldnt you discuss that with the workshop as they all have there own terms and conditions.1. Will they reject the block because of these bits ?

As it happens I asked about swarf and the guy said that they cover all the oilways before and clear the swarf afterwards. They make no guarantees but "Nobody has complained yet" ..

If the block comes back nice and clean, clean it again using gallery brushes in the oilways with petrol and if you've got a compressor, blow out the oilways and nooks and crannies with a high pressure air line, but it sounds from your desciption, that you might get away with just honing the bores and fitting new rings.

I was always worried because I slightly damaged the bores removeing the pistons. Rebore should last me 100,000 miles
