Metro seats

After reading on the Minor Mania site that several people have fitted Metro seats I am going to have a go.
Before I spend some money, has anybody any experience of fitting the back seats? They have angle plates under the base. What do you do about these?

Can't help with info, but if your in n/w Kent sometime I've got a spare pair of Mg metro front seats with headrests going cheap, they need a clean but otherwise ok.

Hi Pete I have fitted Metro front seats with no problems, however for the rears I believe that you have to do a bit of adjustment to the rear arches to get them to fit, it might be an idea to try and contact someone on the Minor Mania site for more info.

Yes I did Pete, I have also fitted them with bases from Charles Ware, it is also possible to make your own up as I have seen this done as well, but have not done it myself. Both times I fitted the Metro seats they already came with the bases.

No, best not. I like my red and beige vinyl. Surely the Minor seats are more comfortable than the Metro ones??

Metro seats really are more comfortable than Moggie seat. MG Metro seats are absolutley perfect. I have tried so many seats from loads of different cars and the MG Metro seats are the ONLY ones I find comfortable.

I made my own seat frames for the fronts as I didn't know they were available to buy.

Fitting the rear Metro seat in the moggie, Why?
Why not buy some of those very nice black leather look seat covers from Argos and put in. They fit over the original moggie rear seat great and fit Metro front seats like they were made to fit them. And looks really good, and perfect if you have a black interior to match them.

I had to use spacer plates to fit the Metro seats to Newton Commercial bases. The seat runners were about 1 inch too far apart. Also I used a M10 nut under the back of the runners to bring the seat base up to a more acceptable angle.
As for using the rear seat, I heard it was possible and Denzils back seat is in a bad way. The leather is dry and splitting and repairing some tears has just put strain on other areas of the leather and new tears appear.
Fortunately I was in Halfords today and picked up a velour seat cover set for a fiver. The front seats covers are missing but the headrest covers are there (cheepo plastic A-frames on my Metro seats

) and the design is almost identical to the Metro jobs

I just bought a pair of seats from a 3 door 1996 Rover 114 from an advert in free-ads online(I think that's the right name?) for £20. Like new. Grey and black velour. I was going to use a pair of sub-frames from Newton at about £75 the pair but found a metal fabrication firm in Camberwell in South London. They made up a pair from my measurements for £50. I will have them in by the time I get to the Bromley Pageant on the 29th June.

Please can you let me know the details of the company who made up the bases for you? I've had enough of non adjustable seats in my ex police car..... and the Newton Commercial reclining ones in black leather are wonderful, but expensive. This sounds like it might be a good alternative!!!!

Anyone near Cambridge with some cheap metro / other suitable car seats?

The company are A&P Metal in Camberwell. I think the address is Consort Road SE15 but I'll check as they are in a railway arch type unit. I picked them up and they had even sprayed them in a nice gloss black finish. I don't know if they will post or not. I'll dig the number out of my mobile phone if you can't find it in the phone book. The frames and seats are going in the car tomorrow so I'll keep you all posted of the fit and any problems encountered.

My new seats are in and I can't believe how thoroughly comfortable they are. Loads of comments already of how they seem to just fit right in with the car. The frames are basically a square of box section to the size of the seat. There is a leg on each corner. At the front, there is a flat bar between the legs. This allowed me to drill it to use 2 of the existing seat mounting holes. A flat pre-drilled lug is welded to each of the rear legs which allowed me to drill the rear floor pan and bolt the frames in. This method also means the back seat passengers can put their feet under the front seat without any obstruction. The seats are simply bolted to the frames. All I would suggest is that high tensile bolts and lock nuts are used throughout along with washers and spreader plates. I'm well pleased with my efforts and look forward to getting plenty of use from the car this summer !!!

I am thinking of having some front metro seats fitted in my Morris Traveller. Although your comments have been helpful, along with the seats what do I actually need?

I've ended up buying Rover 114 seats, though they've not been fitted yet. I found that it's very difficult to get nice seat covers to fit though. I tried the Argos leather look ones, but they were very lumpy and didn't fit the Minor back seat at all. If anyone's got any suggestions that don't cost hundreds of pounds, I'd appreciate it - otherwise I'm going to have to try and make my own

A subframe to fit them to the floor, either from the source mentioned previously or Charles Ware or Newton Commercial.
Some of the Rover 114 (later metro) had half leather GTA model I think, you may be able to get a nearer match to your upholstery from one of those if your lucky.

Check the compatability of other Rover cars. I have seen a Rover 200 with very similar seats to a 114. If the seat runners are the same distance apart then the chances are they are interchangable and can therefore be fitted to a Mog. One thing to watch out for is the side of the seats against the B-post. I once saw 220 coupe in the scrappy. For £70 I could have had it's perfect black leather seats (mmmmmm

) but at the time I didn't know if they would fit.
